Device RecyclingTEMCare Mobile Recycling Services

More than 100 million mobile phones and smart devices will be no longer used annually in Europe alone.
If we recycled all of them, we would save enough energy to power over 20.000 homes for a year.

There are also the security risks to your organization when unused devices with sensitive or private data end up into the wrong hands.

Manage your organization’s devices disbursement safe, secure and environment friendly and support a good course at the same time.

Besides the mobile phones and Smartphones in use, many unused or defective units abound in drawers and closets. Ultimately these unused/defective mobile phones and Smartphones make their way back into the environment. Mobile phones and Smartphones (including their batteries) contain elements that are harmful to the environment unless processed in the correct manner. Therefore it is very important that these elements be removed in a responsible manner, thereby lessening their impact on the environment.

In July 2001 the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive came into force, as compiled by the European Commission in Belgium. With this directive the European Commission set out to tackle the problem of the ever increasing volume of waste whereby maximally electrical and electronic products (which includes mobile phones and Smartphones) would be collected and recycled by 2008.

As of 13 August 2005, the manufacturer is responsible for the (separation) collection and recycling and relevant required subsidization to that end; this also applies to commercial enterprises. The manufacturer must also have an end-plan during design and production to deal with processing of equipment in an environmentally friendly way (‘design for recycling’).

Convergence sees it as its responsibility to help work on a better environment to offer a healthy future to the next generation. The purpose is accordingly to use a safe and environmentally friendly recycling system to make the recycling threshold as low as possible.

Convergence has teamed with the leader in mobile recycling, offering our customers secure, environmental friendly, recycling services.

Convergence’s TEMCare Mobile Recycling Services are easy to implement and able to support any volume of end-of-life handsets and accessories while meeting specific customer requirements.

  • Easy web based enrolment without subscription cost
  • All makes and models are accepted
  • Accessories, batteries and chargers also accepted
  • Data removal services available
  • Postage-paid envelopes supplied
  • Recycle boxes available free of charge (35 devices minimum)

Smartphones store e-mail messages, contact information, and calendar entries which causes increased risks of organization’s data security. Smartphones are capable of storing thousands of documents containing confidential information, hence organizations must do everything they can to protect end of life assets from becoming security risks.

Participating in the TEMCare Mobile Recycling Program gives organizations managed control over the disbursement of their mobile devices by ensuring that all personal data is removed or destroyed from the device, including, but not limited to, application data, telephone numbers, personal codes, email addresses, personal addresses, IM addresses, photos and downloaded files, prior to the reuse, recycling, or disposal.

  • All personal data is erased from all the phones
  • Broken phones are repaired or are destroyed
  • No personal data collected from devices is ever used, sold, collected, or disclosed for any reason.

Protect the Environment

The hundred million cell phones that will reach end of life this year will account for 65,000 tons of waste! TEMCare Mobile Recycling Program will help support your organization’s environmental policy by keeping your organization's used mobile devices out of landfills!

  • Supports client environmental sustainability programs.
  • Disposal or recycling includes that all materials from mobile devices such as wireless handsets, accessories, batteries, cardboard, leather, paper, plastic are disposed.
  • All devices or components classified as hazardous waste are destroyed in compliance with National and European law.
  • There is a strict "no landfill" policy for all materials.

Support a good cause

The TEMCare Mobile Recycling Program gives clients a solution for disposal of unused mobile equipment while extracting the remaining value from the discarded devices to support a charity program.

Each device collected is given a value (based on a published price list of devices, parts, and accessories). This value is used to support charitable donations, currently Medics without Vacation.

Medics without Vacation comprises about 400 doctors, nurses and paramedics who go to Africa every year during their holidays to train young doctors and nurses and operate on patients in D.R. Congo, Rwanda, Burkina Faso, Benin, Tanzania, Cameroon, Burundi and Zambia. Medics without Vacation works exclusively with volunteers who during their spare time go on a mission to Africa. A mission usually comprises a doctor, an anesthetist and a nurse and lasts 2.5 weeks on average. On http://www.azv.be/en-en you can read the blogs of the teams in the field. In 2008, Medics without Vacation sent out 147 teams and 48 tons of medical equipment. In 2009, there will be 160 voluntary teams. All missions are coordinated from Belgium.

Over the last 5 years this program allowed 90,000 Euros of the proceeds from recycling to be donated.

How it Works

Step 1: Register

  • Register your organization online or contact us.
  • We supply the recycling container (or more than one) and the necessary promotional materials to promote the program in your organization.

Step 2a: When your recycle box is full

  • Once your container is full, submit a simple request to have it collected and replaced by a new one.
  • Minimum: 35 recyclable devices.
  • For less than 35 pieces, 35 Euro inclusive will be charged.

Step 2b: When your roller container is full

  • When a roller container is full it is collected and replaced by a new one on request.
  • There is a minimum threshold of 200 kg of devices in the container.
  • With less than 200 kg of devices in the roller container a fixed amount of 75 Euro + VAT applies.

Step 3: Testing and Cleaning

All devices are wiped from any data and screened for possible re-use.

Devices coming into consideration for re-use are tested for functionality, cleaned, provided with a test report and packed for forwarding. The number of cell phones received, certification that data has been removed or has been sent for destruction, and a listing of the value of each device is made available through your web account.

Devices that are no longer suitable for re-use (not working, damaged or too old) have their hazardous substances removed and are recycled to form secondary raw materials to the extent possible.

Step 4: Do I receive a payment?

For mobile phones a payment is made to Medics without Vacation (AZV).

Mobile Device Management - security and efficiency

Over the years TEM has evolved far beyond just checking telecom invoices. TEM domain functions now include usage management, inventory management, ordering and provisioning management, strategic sourcing management and Business Intelligence. This means departments such as Procurement, HR, Finance, Purchasing and ICT are increasingly using TEM software as the pivotal application to manage telecom. No wonder these users are looking to TEM suppliers to provide a solution for the control and management problem of the fast growing mobile devices inventory and the digital assets they contain. That’s where Mobile Device Management comes into the equation.
Managing the data, security and applications on mobile smart devices has become a challenge for ICT administrators, compliance officers, HR and anybody concerned with protection of the digital assets of your organisation. Valuable management information was previously safely protected in a closed network environment, but now lives unsecured on mobile devices. Without the appropriate security, mobile devices are extremely vulnerable to security gaps. IT and security experts want to manage and protect sensitive information and enforce compliance centrally, rather than leaving the burden of security to the mobile device end-user.
Operational costs to support an increasingly mobile workforce have at the same time become a burden to ICT support departments. Convergence’s Mobile Device Management solution providing control across multiple brands of smart devices and platforms, multiple user groups, and multiple processes dramatically reduces support overload, ensures compliance and security, manages mobile applications and provides remote visibility and control.
